Japans many forms of Manga - Kaiji Kawaguchi

Japanese manga comes in many forms. This one's a historical comic strip, in which a modern day Japanese warship is transported back through time in the second world war.

Its the creation of Kaiji Kawaguchi, one of japans most admired Manga artists. He uses this popular medium to address Japans uneasy attitude to its military past. In Manga almost anything is possible.

Manga is huge in Japan. It's standard reading matter for commuters of all ages - who devour the bizaar plots and characters within its thick weekly volumes.
For really dedicated Manga fans though, the comics are for than "just something to read on the train". They flock to Mandrake - a jumble of hokey shops in a West Tokyo suburb.
Here they lose themselves in a world of cartoon make believe. Surrounded by every imaginable Manga publication and product.
