Turtle Poachers Evil Slaughter En Mass 21.03.04 (BBCNews24) close X Turtle Poachers Evil Slaughter - En Mass Hundreds of shells lie scattered on the sand - the Turtles had come here to nest, but met a violent death at the hands of poachers - looking for their eggs and meat. Four of the shells found are the remains of the highly endangered LeatherBack turtle. It's thought that only 50 females come to these shores each year to nest. Sometimes the meat isn't even used - this turtle was killed by its belly being slit open here - in order for a hand to reach inside and steal its eggs. Some of the turtles are still alive at the time. The Government is accused of not doing enough to protect the beaches. But the state maintains that it is doing all it can with meager resources.
