Essentially a piece of software that turns a PC from a work tool into a device that organises and plays music, videos and photos, the Media Centre also has PVR (personal video recorder) functionality so you can record TV programmes to your hard drive without having to buy a dedicated PVR. In addition, broadband and digitally created content can be recorded, stored and manipulated then shown on a TV. New Extender Technology, expected in Europe during the first half of next year, will enable portable devices to access content wirelessly. "Media Centre acts as a home server, but you still have a fully functional PC as well," says Microsoft's e-home marketing manager David Weeks. "When you bring a new consumer electronic device home, it will automatically connect to Media Centre." At the CeBIT computer show this year, the software giant unveiled a portable version of Media Centre - expected to be launched by its manufacturing partners in the run-up to Christmas in the US. It is capable of delivering video and digital camera stills in addition to music.
